Five tips for more light and space in your interior
Do you feel that your home is very small, or do you notice that the colours feel gloomy and subdued? You don't have to renovate your house to create more space and light. There are a number of simple styling and furniture tricks that will make your house feel lighter by itself. Here you will find five handy tips at a glance.
1. Decorate with mirrors
Mirrors reflect light and therefore automatically ensure that your home feels lighter. The reflected image also ensures that a small space has more depth. It is possible to make your home look wider or higher with mirrors. You create height by placing vertical mirrors in a room, while horizontal mirrors make a room feel wider.
2. Opt for translucent curtains
Blackout curtains block out all natural light from outside. That is of course exactly what you want to prevent when your home feels dark. Replace your old curtains with translucent ones in a light colour. This way, you still have the same amount of privacy without sacrificing natural light.
3. Combine with light furniture
Do you like sturdy furniture like a leather sofa or a metal coffee table? Simply combine these dark pieces of furniture with lighter counterparts. White dining room chairs look great in combination with a dark brown dining table and it is possible to brighten up a dark sofa with a light rug.
4. Give your walls a light colour
The feeling of space in a room is mainly defined by the colour of your walls. That’s because light colours reflect light, while dark colours block light. Choose light shades if you want your home to feel more spacious. You can also enhance this effect even more with high-gloss paint. The paint does not necessarily have to be white, because pastel colours such as light blue are also suitable for this trick.
5. Install glass doors
The more open your home is, the more spacious it will feel. You create that openness by replacing wooden doors with glass doors. Even a door with a large glass window can already make a difference. That way the light flows from one room to the other and you prevent your home from feeling small and claustrophobic.
