How did bouclé originate?
When Florence Knoll asked Eero Saarinen in the late 1940s to design a chair she could “really sink into,” she probably didn’t realize that the industrial designer would interpret her description down to the upholstery fiber. The result of her request debuted in 1948 in Knoll’s Classic Bouclé, a nubby textile made from yarn with matching and curled fibers. In the decade following Saarinen’s release, bouclé fabrics spread across various categories. Alpine became a staple of fashion couture houses, with Chanel being one of the most notable, as well as mid-century furniture designers. Derived from the French word meaning “curled,” bouclé can refer to a yarn made from a series of looped fibers, or the fabric made from it. Wool is the most common fiber to undergo this technique, although cotton, linen, and silk are also used to achieve this texture. Alpine fabric has become indispensable in the furniture industry. Bouclé maintenance
Maintaining bouclé-covered furniture is very easy. We have a few tips to help you enjoy your furniture for longer.
– Never place furniture close to the fireplace to prevent soot stains.
– Avoid excessive sunlight. Natural fibers such as cotton and linen are more susceptible to discoloration in the sun than wool and polyester.
– Clean stains with a suitable cleaning product, never with aggressive cleaning agents. Do not rub the stain, but dab it with a clean damp cloth.
– Make sure that sharp objects, such as ‘nails’ in jeans, buckles, or pet nails, do not come into contact with the fabric, as these can cause damage.
Prevention is the most important form of maintenance for Alpine furniture. Therefore, avoid direct sunlight and do not place the furniture too close to a heat source. For weekly maintenance, it is recommended to remove dust. This will keep the color vibrant and beautiful. Any loose fluff can be easily removed with a damp chamois.
The appearance of bouclé is similar to Chenille. However, bouclé fabric is woven in a different way, which makes it more resistant to wear and tear. It also means that the fabric recovers more easily when you have been sitting on it.
